October Magazine

In this sixth bilingual issue:

  • From Antwerp to Milan Passing through Lyon , Marseille or Paris , we offer you a selection of habitats which perhaps express more than usual the notion of cocoon. Firstly by their compactness for at least five of them. But also by their situations: perched under the roofs, inserted in a large complex or hidden at the end of a cul-de-sac. Or again by their virtuosity where, freeing themselves from their constraints of size or plan, they each reveal a singular universe which makes them true jewels to live in. The dwellings which complete them also express this notion of refuge, in an acceptance where each in their own way, some by the color, some by the materials, some by the atmosphere, they are the ideal shell dreamed of by the human creatures who inhabit them. Cocoons therefore, but open. Through the journeys of their inhabitants, we discover that their development is the fruit of encounters, curiosity, experiences and also a desire to welcome.

  • How good it is to let off steam outside the cocoon! At the time of the Paris Olympic Games, we explore how the inhabitants of large cities reconcile their urbanity with the visceral need for movement of the human body. In our report " Sport in the City ", we discover that even if it is not always welcome, sport always manages to infiltrate city life. We take this opportunity to focus on those who have made the city their playground through their practices, often newly approved as Olympic disciplines. Whether they indulge in parkour, breakdancing, skateboarding or BMX, how do these urban athletes experience the city? How has their relationship with it evolved? What are their favorite places? Encounters.

  • And when the cocoon inspires us? We invite ourselves to the home of the artist of Venezuelan and Brazilian origin Rosa Maria Unda Souki whose apartment, located in a residence designed by Marcel Lods at the end of the Second World War, became a major source of inspiration. The artist, exiled, expresses in her series " The Research ", her search for housing made almost impossible by her status until she found the apartment she now occupies with her family. She gives us a dreamlike and peaceful vision, making us powerfully grasp the indispensable and marvelous nature of shelter. Superb.

Eclecticism, poetry, art, escape, beauty and innovation are definitely not a function of the number of square meters!
