About the book: The origins of Silicon Valley are often described by emphasizing a unique mix of hippies, hackers, and libertarian students who converted to capitalism. The appeal of this thesis too often obscures less flamboyant aspects of its ideology. This book seeks to analyze neglected dimensions: the key role of venture capital, the explicitly reactionary positions of certain investors, the importance of religious, colonial, and neo-Darwinist influences, and dystopian, even apocalyptic visions of the future. To understand forms of technological domination, we can no longer be satisfied with a moralizing condemnation of American tech bosses. A consistent critique must take into account how they are supported by a plurality of ideologies drawn from philosophy, finance, management, and design.
