In the summer of 1998, Microsoft sought to position its MSN Messenger software against the then-market leader, AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). A young programmer was tasked with implementing an interoperability option that would allow MSN customers to find their AIM contacts. What followed was a months-long code war (attack/counterattack) between opposing teams...

David Auerbach is an American writer and graduate of Yale University. He joined Microsoft early on to work on MSN Messenger and then worked for Google until 2008. He has published two books: Bitwise: A Life in Code (2018) and Meganets: How Digital Forces Beyond Our Control Commander Our Daily Lives and Inner Realities (2023).
